This part sometimes corrode due to saltwater flooding and forgetting to winterise as instructed in the manual. also if the bearing rollers or cage is corroded, particularly pitted, then it is important to refit new.
this fits in the crankshaft, which is pressed together using 20 tonnes and precision alignement jig and expert technique to balance and true and retain con-rod end float.
although it is difficult to inspect without pressing apart, with the piston at TDC, you can see the edges of the bearing if they are discoloured/rusty, and also with the crankshaft and piston removed, spinning the con rod around you can hear wear noise or rumble within. I would also say that if you have more than 0.003" movement using a dial guage up/down relative to the crank, it is excessive play and likely worn.
